Business Checking Fees Compared
April 2026: 14 Accounts, Every Fee

The monthly maintenance fee is usually the smallest part of your true cost. Here is every fee category for every major business checking account, consolidated in one place.

Why the Monthly Fee Is the Wrong Thing to Optimise For

Every comparison article leads with monthly fee. It is the most visible number. It is rarely the most important one.

A business doing 250 transactions per month at Chase Business Complete pays $92 in transaction overages (230 over the 20-item limit at $0.40 each), plus $15 if balance dips below $2,000 -- $107 effective monthly cost from a nominally low-fee account. The same business at Relay or BlueVine pays $0 in transaction fees. The $107 difference compounds to $1,284 per year.

The fees that actually move the needle: transaction volume overages, cash deposit percentage fees above the monthly threshold, international wire FX markup (the single largest fee most businesses never see itemised), and incoming wire fees.

Use the true-cost calculator to see your actual monthly cost with your real transaction volume, balance, cash deposit, and wire numbers.

Fee Categories Explained

Monthly Maintenance Fee

The base charge for maintaining the account. Ranges from $0 (BlueVine, Mercury, Relay, Novo, Found, Lili, Capital One, Oxygen, Axos, U.S. Bank Silver) to $16 (BofA). Most traditional banks waive it at a minimum daily balance of $500 to $5,000.

Transaction Fees

A per-item charge above the free monthly limit. Chase: $0.40 per transaction above 20. BofA: $0.45 above 200. Wells Fargo: $0.50 above 100. Axos: $0.30 above 200. All major fintechs and Capital One: unlimited free. Note: Chase's 20-item limit is low -- a business doing one ACH debit per weekday hits the cap in one month.

Cash Deposit Fees

Chase and BofA are free for cash deposits up to their monthly cap ($5,000 and $7,500 respectively), then charge $0.25 to $0.30 per $100 over the limit. BlueVine charges approximately $4.95 per Green Dot visit with a $500 daily cap. Capital One accepts cash at ATMs at no charge. Mercury, Relay, Novo, Found, Rho, Lili, and Oxygen do not accept cash deposits at all.

International Wire FX Markup

The hidden fee in international wires. Chase and BofA apply a 3 to 4 percent markup above the mid-market exchange rate. On a $10,000 wire, that is $300 to $400 on top of the $40 to $45 ticket fee. Mercury charges $0 flat and uses the mid-market rate. Relay charges $10 flat. For businesses paying overseas contractors regularly, this fee compounds aggressively.

Overdraft and NSF Fees

Traditional banks charge $25 to $35 per overdraft item. Chase: $34. BofA: $35 (or link a savings account for free coverage). Wells Fargo: $35. Most fintechs decline the transaction rather than charging a fee. If you run lean on operating balance, the fintech approach is safer.

Domestic Wire Fees

Free at Mercury, Rho, and Axos. $10 at Relay and Found. $15 at BlueVine and Oxygen. $20 at Capital One. $25 at Chase and Found. $30 at BofA and Wells Fargo. $30 at U.S. Bank. If you send two domestic wires per month, the difference between Mercury ($0) and Chase ($50) is $600 per year.

Worked Example: $12,000 Cash, $30,000 Balance, 140 Transactions, 2 Wires

A mid-size service business with monthly cash deposits of $12,000, average balance $30,000, 140 transactions, and 2 domestic wire transfers. Here is the true monthly cost at five common accounts:

Note: BlueVine's Green Dot cash model is expensive at high volumes because of the $500 daily cap requiring multiple visits. Chase is the clear winner for this cash-heavy profile. Run the calculator with your exact numbers for a personalised ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common hidden fees in business checking accounts?

The monthly maintenance fee is usually the smallest component of your true cost. The fees that actually move the needle are: international wire FX markup (Chase and BofA add 3 to 4 percent above mid-market, turning a $10,000 wire into $350 to $450 in additional charges); cash deposit overage fees (0.25 to 0.30 percent above the monthly threshold at traditional banks); per-transaction fees above the free limit ($0.40 to $0.50 each); and incoming wire fees ($10 to $15 even at ostensibly free accounts). Run the true-cost calculator with your actual transaction volume before deciding.

Do free business checking accounts have hidden fees?

Yes, several. BlueVine is free on monthly fees but charges $4.95 per cash deposit via Green Dot and $15 per outgoing domestic wire. Novo is free monthly but does not support traditional wires at all. Axos Basic is free monthly but charges $35 per outgoing international wire. Mercury and Relay are genuinely low-fee for their target audiences (no-cash, low-wire businesses) but if you need cash deposits or frequent wires, neither is as cheap as it appears.

What is the average monthly fee for a business checking account?

Among traditional banks, the average monthly fee ranges from $10 to $16 per month, typically waivable at $500 to $5,000 minimum daily balance. Among fintech and online banks including BlueVine, Mercury, Relay, Novo, Found, Lili, and Axos, the majority charge no monthly fee. The total monthly cost picture changes dramatically once you factor in transaction fees, cash deposit fees, and wire fees.

How much do business checking accounts charge for wire transfers?

Domestic outgoing wire fees range from $0 at Mercury, Relay, Rho, and Axos to $30 at BofA and Wells Fargo. Chase charges $25 outgoing. Novo charges nothing for outgoing ACH but does not support traditional bank wires. For international wires, the range is $0 to $50 for the ticket fee, plus a separate FX markup of 0 to 4 percent. Chase and BofA charge both a $40 to $45 ticket fee AND a 3 to 4 percent FX markup. On a $10,000 international wire, Chase's true cost can reach $400 to $450 total. Mercury charges $0 for international wires and uses mid-market rates.

Which business checking accounts have no transaction fees?

BlueVine, Mercury, Relay, Novo, Found, Lili, Rho, Oxygen, and Capital One all have unlimited free transactions with no per-item charge. Among traditional banks, only Capital One matches this. Chase Business Complete allows 20 free transactions per month, then $0.40 each. BofA Fundamentals allows 200 free, then $0.45 each. Wells Fargo Initiate allows 100 free, then $0.50 each. For a business doing 300 plus transactions monthly, the fintech accounts can save $40 to $100 per month in transaction fees alone.
